Western New England Drops 8-1 Decision to Roger Williams in CCC Opener
Schrader posts 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 13, 2018) – The Western New England University women's tennis team fell to Roger Williams University 8-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both teams on Thursday afternoon at the Volvo Courts.
Top Performers
Junior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) accounted for Western New England's lone win of the match with her 6-3, 6-3 result over Taryn Roche at No. 2 singles.
Match Review
The Hawks were victorious in all three doubles flights on their way to a 3-0 lead. At No. 1, Schrader and sophomore Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) were defeated 8-5 by Heidi Martin and Jessica Magliato, while Roche and Riley Spillane topped senior Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) and sophomore Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) 8-1 at No. 2.
In the final doubles flight, Morgan Crimmins and Libby Bennett came away with an 8-2 win over junior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and freshman Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.).
Roger Williams also won five of six singles matchups, led by Martin's 6-4, 6-2 triumph over LaPress at No. 1. Schrader defeated Roche at No. 2, but Spillane edged Petra Martinelli 6-5, 6-1 at No. 3 and Magliato registered a 6-1, 6-1 win over sophomore Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) at No. 4.
In the final two singles flights, Crimmins topped Janet Martinelli, 6-0, 6-3, and Tanya Gianitsos defeated Palumbo, 6-1, 6-0.
