Golden Bears Fall to Gordon, 8-1

Schrader improves to 6-1 in singles play this season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 3, 2018) – The Western New England University women's tennis team dropped its regular season finale to Gordon College, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.

Western New England's lone win came courtesy of junior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.), who defeated Anne Carsey 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

In the other singles matchups, Justine Hanson topped sophomore Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, Gabrielle Brucker posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over senior Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) at No. 3, Kaelyn Hall came away with a 6-1, 6-0 result over sophomore Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) at No. 4, Caitlin Kwok downed junior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5, and Anne Mullane cruised past sophomore Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Gordon took all three doubles matchups, as Hanson and Brucker earned an 8-2 result over LaPress and Schrader in the top spot, Carsey and Hall edged Palumbo and Martinelli 8-5 at No. 2, and Kwok teamed up with Emily Ontiveros to collect an 8-4 triumph over Bauer and Cote at No. 3.

Western New England drops to 2-6 (2-5 CCC) with the loss, while the Fighting Scots improve to 5-3 (4-2 CCC).
