Western New England Suffers 8-1 Setback at Nichols
Schrader picks up win at No. 2 singles for Golden Bears
DUDLEY, Mass. (September 29, 2018) – The Western New England University women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback to Nichols College on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Robinson Tennis Courts.
Junior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) accounted for the Golden Bears' lone point of the match with her 7-5 victory over Alanna Judd at No. 2 singles.
In the remaining five singles matchups, Amarie Settiwongse defeated sophomore Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, senior Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) fell 6-2, 6-2 to Kara Stankewitz at No. 3, sophomore Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) came up short in a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Megan Nathanson at No. 4, junior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Juliana Herrera in the No. 5 slot, and freshman Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) was handed a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Danielle Mandel at No. 6.
In doubles action, Western New England's top duo of LaPress and Schrader fell to Settiwongse and Isabelle Leonardi 8-3, while Petra Martinelli and sophomore Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) were blanked 8-0 by Rachel McDonald and Nathanson at No. 2, and the tandem of Bauer and Janet Martinelli were bested 8-1 by Lindsey Kaplan and Kristina Domantis in the third spot.
