Western New England Cruises Past Curry, 9-0

Golden Bears earn first win of 2018 campaign

MILTON, Mass. (September 20, 2018) – The Western New England University women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Curry College on Thursday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Big Nine Courts.

The Golden Bears earned their first triumph of the season with wins in all three doubles matchups and all six singles positions.

Western New England's top doubles duo of senior Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) and sophomore Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) rallied from a 5-0 deficit to earn an 8-6 victory over Hannah Faghan and Sidara Cash-Sortwell. 

Sophomore Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) and freshman Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-2 win against Alison Daigle and Rosario Robidoux at No. 2, while junior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) defeated Kelsie Merrill and Samantha Glbert 8-1 at No. 3.

In singles action, LaPress posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Faghan in the top spot and Petra Martinelli edged Cash-Sortwell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2. Cote and Bauer were victorious in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, while Janet Martinelli and Palumbo came away with wins in the final two spots.
