Clark Starts Fast in 77-52 Win over Golden Bears

Gelineau comes off the bench to score team-high ten points

WORCESTER, Mass. (December 10, 2016) – The Clark University men's basketball team opened up a 16-point first half lead on its way to a 77-52 victory over Western New England University this afternoon in non-conference action at the Kneller Athletic Center.  

Top Performers
• Senior guard Mike Gelineau (Waltham, Mass.) came off the bench to score a team-high ten points on 3-of-7 shooting.
• Freshman forward Mayo Aina (Providence, R.I.) chipped in with nine points and four boards in 18 minutes off the bench.

• Sophomore forward Luca McCormick (Bradenton, Fla.) paced the Cougars with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with five rebounds, while senior guard Joe Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) finished with eight points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Game Review
• Clark raced out to a 24-7 lead midway through the first half with the help of 11 early points from McCormick, who drained a trio of three pointers.
• Western New England pulled as close as seven (32-25) following a dunk by Gelineau with 2:21 left in the half, but the Golden Bears faced a double-digit deficit (38-27) at the break.
• Clark scored the first seven points of the second half to open up a 45-27 advantage.
• Graduate guard Luis Agrait (South Hadley, Mass.) scored eight straight points for Western New England, which trailed by just 12 (50-38) at the 13:39 mark. The Cougars answered with a 7-0 run, however, and saw their lead reach 20 (60-40) when McCormick connected from beyond the arc with 11:38 remaining.
• The Golden Bears put together a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to draw to within 11, but they would get no closer as Clark pulled away late.

Notes
• Clark held a 45-25 rebounding advantage and scored 26 points in the paint.
• Western New England shot 34% (18-of-53) from the field, including 23.1% (6-of-26) from three-point range. Clark posted a 46.4% (26-of-56) shooting clip overall and a 43.5% (10-of-23) mark from beyond the arc.
• Six different Golden Bears scored at least five points in the contest.

Western New England (1-8) will look to get back on track on January 3 at the University of New England, while Clark travels to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take face Edgewood University on December 28.
