SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (July 13, 2018) – Rising sophomore forward Zach Tavitian (Milford, Conn.) of the Western New England University men's basketball team is competing for the Armenian national team at the FIBA U20 European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria over the next ten days.

Armenia opened play this morning with a 75-62 loss to Luxembourg in the group phase at Universiada Hall in Sofia. Tavitian finished with five points, a team-high nine rebounds, four blocks and two steals in the setback. Armenia will be back in action on Saturday against the Czech Republic at St. George School.

"This is Zach's second year going over to Europe to play with the Armenian national team," Western New England head coach Colin Tabb said. "It's a great opportunity for him to play for some outstanding coaches and against some very good competition while representing Armenia. This is an awesome experience for Zach, and we'll all be rooting for him and the Armenian national team."

Tavitian made significant contributions for an improved Western New England squad during his freshman campaign in 2017-18. The Milford, Conn. native was selected as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Year after starting  all 25 contests for the Golden Bears and averaging 12.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.
