Softball Splits on the Road at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. (April 7, 2021) – The Western New England University softball team split their doubleheader today at Toppa Field at Salve Regina on Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1: Salve Regina 5, Western New England 3
Senior Emily Cooney, junior Dina DiBlasio, and first-year Kaleigh Blades each had two hits for the Golden Bears.

Kaitlyn Bennett led the Seahawks with three hits.

Salve Regina took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after an RBI triple from Bennett. Western New England answered in the next half inning, taking the lead 2-1, and then scored another in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Seahawks scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. 

Game 2: Western New England 6, Salve Regina 5
Sophomore Kailey Carrano, first-year Taylor Keegan, and first-year Kaleigh Blades each had two hits for Western New England. Keegan also had two runs-batted-in.

Maddie Capetta had three hits along with two RBI's for the Seahawks.

The Golden Bears came out strong in Game 2, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning after an rbi from DiBlasio and a sacrifice fly from first-year Madison Mason. Western New England pushed their lead even further in the third and fifth innings, going up 6-1. The Seahawks fought back and got within one in the final inning, but the Golden Bear defense held strong to close out the win.
