Softball Sweeps Nichols on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 18, 2021) – The Western New England University softball team swept Nichols in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader on senior day on Sunday afternoon at Golden Bear Softball Park.

Game 1: Western New England 5, Nichols 3
Senior Madison Murabito led the Golden Bears in game one with two hits, including one home run, and two RBI's. Senior Allie Buzzeo had two hits including a triple. Senior Paige Uliase went the distance, allowing five hits and three runs with nine strikeouts.

Allie Brown had two hits and one RBI for the Bison. Samantha Kostek chipped in a home run with two RBI's.

The game remained scoreless until Kostek got the Bison on the board in the top of the third inning with a home run. Western New England responded in the next half inning when Murabito hit a home run to kick off a four-run inning for the Golden Bears.

Later in the inning, sophomore Cori Rizzo hit an RBI single and junior Dina DiBlasio hit a two-run single to push the Golden Bear lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Murabito hit an RBI single to make it 5-1. The Bison grabbed two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Bears held on to take game one.

Game 2: Western New England 11, Nichols 3
DiBlasio led the Golden Bears in game two with two home runs and six RBI's. Sophomore Lexie Hemstock and first-year Kaleigh Blades each chipped in two hits while Blades had three RBI's.

Hailey Bogusz had two hits for the Bison while Alexandria Rodi hit a home run.

Western New England wasted no time getting on the board as DiBlasio hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. Rodi answered for Nichols in the next half inning, hitting a two-run home run. The Golden Bears kept the scoring going, grabbing five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Buzzeo scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Western New England scored another run on a wild pitch, and then DiBlasio hit her second home run of the game, again a three-run home run. The Golden Bears added a few more runs later in the game when Blades hit an RBI triple in the fourth and then she hit a two-run single in the sixth to end it.
