Softball Splits Doubleheader at Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. (April 21, 2021) – The Western New England University softball split their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader at Nichols on Wednesday afternoon.

Western New England took game one by a score of 11-9, while Nichols took game 2 with a score of 8-5.

Game 1: Western New England 11, Nichols 9
First-year Madison Mason hit two solo home runs for the Golden Bears while first-year Kaleigh Blades hit one triple and a grand slam. Sophomore Lexie Hemstock went 3-for-5 at the plate while senior pitcher Paige Uliase went the distance for the win with six strikeouts.

Taylor Commesso had a home run for the Bison while Allie Brown hit a triple.

Western New England took the lead early after sophomore Kailey Carrano hit a two-run double to center field in the top of the first inning. Nichols eventually tied it and took the lead in the bottom of the third inning after Alexandria Rodi hit a two-run single to give Nichols a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Golden Bears took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity when sophomore Cori Rizzo hit a RBI single up the middle and then in the next at-bat Blades hit a grand slam to center field to give them an 8-5 lead. Mason hit her first home run of the game in the top of the fifth inning to go up 9-5. Nichols chipped away at the lead, but then in the top of the seventh Mason hit her second home run of the game to make it 11-9 in favor of Western New England.

Game 2: Nichols 8, Western New England 5
First-year Taylor Keegan led the Golden Bears in game two with three hits, including a double and a triple, while junior Dina DiBlasio went 3-for-4 from the plate.

Rodi had a home run for the Bison while Samantha Kostek and Commesso each had two hits.

Western New England got things going in the first inning when Rizzo singled up the middle to send Keegan across the plate. Nichols took the lead in the bottom of the second when Rodi hit a three-run home run. An RBI single from Keegan in the fourth inning cut the deficit to one.

The Bison had a big fourth inning, scoring four runs after RBI singles from Kostek and Brown and a two-run double from Commesso. Sophomore Paige Baca hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to send Blades across the plate while Keegan scored another run the sixth for the Golden Bears.
