First Half Runs Fuel Springfield’s 16-10 Win Over Western New England in 2017 Season Opener

Winer leads Golden Bears with three goals, five assists

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (February 25, 2017) – The Springfield College women's lacrosse team used a pair of 4-0 first half runs to open up a five-goal halftime lead on its way to an eventual 16-10 victory over crosstown rival Western New England University this afternoon in the season opener for both teams at Stagg Field.

Top Performers
• Junior attack Julia Winer (Longmeadow, Mass.), the 2016 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) assist leader, led the way for the Golden Bears with three goals and five assists.
• Graduate midfielder Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) netted a pair of goals while also recording three draw controls and one ground ball.
• Junior Rachel Canning (Lincoln Park, N.J.) scored on all three of her shots on goal, recovered one ground ball and caused one turnover.

• Junior attack Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) fueled Springfield's offense with a game-high five goals and one assist. Corsano put ten shots on target and led all players with seven draw controls.
• Junior Stephanie Hyslip (Hanson, Mass.) and sophomores Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.), Julia Bireley (Franklin, Mass.) and Allie Goddard (Acton, Mass.) chipped in with two goals each.

Game Review
• With the game tied 1-1 early in the first half, Springfield strung together four straight goals, including two from Corsano, to open up a 5-1 lead.
• After goals by Winer and Canning cut Western New England's deficit in half, the Pride utilized another 4-0 run to stretch their lead to six (9-3).
• Winer set up Canning and junior Lauren Hurley (Saint James, N.Y.) for goals late in the half before Springfield sophomore Katie Stallone (Seaford, N.Y.) capped the scoring in the final minute to give the Pride a 10-5 lead at the break.
• Canning and freshman Madison Barron (Lebanon, Pa.) opened the second half with goals as the Golden Bears pulled to within three (10-7), but Springfield answered with a 3-0 run that featured goals from Hyslip, Corsano and Nusbaum to restore its six-goal cushion.
• Western New England used consecutive goals from Norden to stay in the contest, but the Golden Bears were unable to close the gap as Goddard found the back of the net twice to push Springfield's lead back to six.
• Winer tallied one more goal for Western New England with 21 seconds remaining in regulation, while a Springfield goal in the final seconds extended the final margin to six.

Notes
• Springfield outshot Western New England 32-17 and won 19 of 25 draw controls.
• The Pride recorded 19 ground balls, while the Golden Bears finished with 13.
• Western New England junior goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with 11 saves.
• Springfield is receiving votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III Poll.
