Top-10 WNE Athletics Stories of Calendar Year 2013: You'll "Dig" No. 4

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—With our latest installment for the WNEGoldenBears.com countdown of the top-10 stories in Calendar Year 2013, Western New England Athletics announces our fourth place finisher in the Golden Bears women's volleyball team's second straight Eastern College Athletic Conference New England Championship crown.

Western New England has been on a resurgence the past few seasons under third-year coach Bret Stothart. The last time the Golden Bears finished with a record below .500 was in 2010 when the team finished 10-20, but the past two seasons have been two of the best in program history: 25-9 this past fall and 25-7 in 2012.

In mid-November, Golden Bears Volleyball became the second women's program at WNE to win back-to-back postseason titles; women's lacrosse was the first to do so with its ECAC championship titles in 2008 and 2009.

Western New England defeated Smith College in an exciting five-set match 25-20, 25-14, 19-25, 18-25, 15-6, on Nov. 16. Junior outside hitter Kasey Cameron led the Golden Bear attack with 14 kills (.243 hitting) and 14 digs, which was good for her third double-double of the season, and she was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. The Golden Bears also had nice offensive outputs from seniors Tyler Singh and Devyn Frank, with 14 and 10 kills, respectively.

Western New England conquered its first ECAC New England women's volleyball championship in 2012 with an upset victory over top-seeded Brandeis University on the Judges' home floor, 25-16, 17-25, 25-17, 25-21.
