Golden Bears reach semifinal round for third consecutive year
BIDDEFORD, Maine (November 1, 2018) – The third-seeded Western New England University field hockey team saw its season come to a close with a 5-0 loss to second-seeded University of New England on Thursday evening in the semifinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at UNE's Blue Bolt Field.
The Nor'easters (12-9) advance to Saturday's CCC title game and will take on the winner of tonight's other semifinal matchup between Endicott and Salve Regina. Western New England finishes the 2018 campaign with a 7-12 record.
Top Performers
UNE's balanced offensive attack featured five different goal scorers in senior Kersey Boulay (Liberty, Maine), junior Kendra MacDonald (Lebanon, N.H.), sophomore Grace Grenier (Kennebunkport, Maine) and freshmen Julia Steeves (Skowhegan, Maine) and Bailey Lynch (Upton, Mass.).
Western New England was led offensively by freshman midfielder Ali Martin (South Windsor, Conn.), who recorded a team-high four shots on goal.
In her final collegiate contest, senior goalkeeper Dana Dufour (Gloucester, Mass.) finished with ten saves in the cage.
Game Review
UNE struck first 7:13 into the contest when MacDonald tallied her team-leading 17th goal of the season on a penalty corner play.
Seven minutes later, the Nor'easters added to their advantage as Boulay collected a rebound after having her shot saved by Dufour and scored on the second chance. UNE led 2-0 at halftime after outshooting the Golden Bears 17-1 in the opening frame.
Less than three minutes into the second half, the home team went up 3-0 on an unassisted goal by Grenier. Steeves (43:43) and Lynch (57:14) added goals later in the half for the Nor'easters, who went on to claim a 5-0 triumph.
Notes
• After being held without a shot on goal in the first half, the Golden Bears put five shots on target over the final 35 minutes of play. UNE sophomore Liz Sargent (South Burlington, Vt.) stopped all five attempts to earn the shutout.
• Western New England has reached the CCC semifinals in three consecutive seasons under head coach Mary Clare Snediker.
