No. 8 Mammoths Too Much for Golden Bears, Men's Lacrosse Falls 17-9

AMHERST, Mass. (March 29, 2023) – The Western New England Men's lacrosse team was looking to keep their momentum after their solid win over Roger Williams on Monday, as they made the short trip up to Amherst College on Wednesday night. Going up against the #8 team in the country would be a hard task for WNE, making it their second game in the past week against a top ten team in the country. In the end, the Mammoths came away with the win as they beat the Golden Bears, 17-9.

Records:

  • Western New England: 2-7
  • Amherst College: 6-1

How it Happened:

Amherst came out of the gates hot and maintained the pressure on WNE for the whole first quarter, scoring six unanswered goals over the first 15 minutes of play. Tanry Krummenacher scored first for Amherst, just under a minute into play, to put the Mammoths up a goal early. Both teams would trade possessions over the next few minutes, with Golden Bear goalie Jonathon Salsbury, and Mammoth goalie, Mitch Likins each making a save, before Jake Bennett would find the back of the net for the Mammoths, coming from Matthew Sheinberg with 11:23 left to play in the first. Sheinberg would pick up another assist a few minutes later, when he found Bob Gross for another Mammoths goal. Bennett would score another goal, for the Mammoths fourth goal, while Matt Adams got on the board, scoring his first on the day, to make it 5-0 Mammoths, with just over three minutes left in the first. Amherst kept applying the pressure during their extra-man opportunity; Salsbury made two saves in net, before Krummenacher was able to sneak a shot past him, scoring the final goal of the first.

Zachary Mein opened off the second with a goal for WNE, just 56 seconds into the quarter, to bring the Golden Bears to within five. Over the next few minutes, both teams would trade possessions, firing shots on net. Likins would make three saves over that stretch, while Salsbury made a pair of saves, before Thomas Ehret was able to find the back of the net for the mammoths. 25 seconds later, WNE answered, as Thomas Labbe found Mike Bannon for the Golden Bears goal. WNE would score two more goals over the next two minutes, as Ben Kolb assisted on Jacob Roy's goal, and Labbe would add another point, scoring this time, as Dylan Hanley found him open, for WNE's third consecutive goal. The Mammoths would kill the Golden Bear's momentum, as Likins would make two saves in net, which led to Krummenacher taking advantage of an extra-man opportunity, with 5:55 left in the first half. Adams would score a pair for the Mammoths, making it three goals in a row, with just under three minutes to play in the second quarter. WNE tried to answer before the end of the half, but Likins would make two saves in the last minute, to keep the Mammoths up, 10-4.

Amherst would continue to apply the pressure on WNE, as Bayard DeMallie would open the scoring in the second half, just under four minutes into the third quarter. Jack Houlden would answer just 31 seconds later for WNE, as Ben Kolb would find him for a WNE goal, to bring them back to within six. Neither team would score over the next six minutes until DeMallie would score for Amherst, with 4:30 left in the third. Just 11 seconds later, Krummenacher would score for the Mammoths, followed by Gross netting another Amherst goal, 44 seconds after. WNE would try to answer, but Likins would make a pair of saves before Hanley would fire a shot past him for WNE. The remaining two minutes of the quarter would remain scoreless, as the Mammoths would head into the fourth, up 14-6.

In the first two and half minutes of the fourth, each team would net a goal, as Bannon would find Roy for WNE, and Dylan Hsu would score for Amherst. A minute later, a Salsbury save would lead to a Mein goal for WNE, as they tried to gain some momentum. Hanley scored his second on the day, as Bannon found him for the Golden Bear's ninth goal of the game. Amherst would halt WNE's momentum, as DeMallie would score for the Mammoths, just 23 seconds later. Neither team would score for over six minutes, with Salsbury making three saves, before Thomas Ehret netted the final goal of the game, with just under three minutes left. In the end, the Mammoths came away with the win, beating the Golden Bears, 17-9.
