Men's and Women's Tennis Wraps Up Spring Break in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 17, 2023) – The Western New England men's and women's tennis teams finished their 2023 Spring Break schedule on Friday afternoon by taking on NCAA Division II Shepard University from the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort. 

How it Happened (Men's):
The Shepard Rams took the opening point in doubles action on the men's side after besting WNE 2-0. The Golden Bears would play by NCAA Division II rules, which grants one point to the team with the most doubles wins through three matches. On the singles side, both Paul Riccio and Tyler Macdowall would win via forfeit while Michael Robichaud would take a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hamilton Hall to pace the Golden Bears. Shepard would fire back with three singles victories to take the match 4-3, dropping Western New England to 1-4 on the season. 

How it Happened (Women's): 

Shepard would be awarded the one point in doubles action after taking two out of the three matches. Dani Martinez and Gianna Arace would take a 6-2 victory over Shepard's Charlotte Pardue and Andrea Navarrete, though WNE would fall in other doubles action. In singles action, Western New England would win three times after Sydney Shepard won in the fifth position, 6-0, 6-0 while teammate Gabrielle Tirkot won 6-0, 5-0 via retirement and Gianna Arace would take a hard fought 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory to win the fourth position match for the Golden Bears. Shepard would collect wins in the first three positions on the women's side to take a 4-3 win overall in the match.

  • Western New England men's tennis will begin conference play on Thursday, March 23 at 3:30 PM by hosting the Seahawks of Salve Regina University.
