Roche Wins Twice, WNE Falls on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 15, 2023) – The Western New England men's tennis team came away with two wins of three in doubles action before dropping four of six matches in singles to fall 5-4 on Saturday afternoon to the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology. WNE honored their three seniors, Yasir Faisal, Michael Robichaud and Kevin Sharpe, prior to the match.

How it Happened:

Needing a win over the Leopards to get a playoff spot in the CCC, Western New England got off on the right foot when the doubles #2 and doubles #3 spots went the way of WNE. Michael Robichaud and Thomas Roche won their doubles #2 spot by a score of 8-3 while Paul Riccio and Tyler Macdowall won 8-2, giving WNE a 2-1 lead after the doubles round.
Wentworth would come storming back in the singles round, grabbing wins in each of the first three matches played. Thomas Roche would break that streak in the fourth singles match when the first year defeated Eric Doraci 6-2, 7-5 to get WNE a win. Paul Riccio would also claim victory for the Golden Bears, winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) though it would not be enough as Western New England would fall 5-4 to the Leopards, being eliminated from playoff contention.

Up Next on the Schedule:

  • WNE will hit the road for their final match of the season on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:30 PM when WNE meets Nichols College.
