Women’s Basketball Rebounds with 90-43 Victory over Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. (January 11, 2020) – The Western New England University women's basketball team rebounded with a 90-43 victory over Wentworth in CCC action at the Tansey Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Top Performers
The Golden Bears had four starters score in double figures. Senior guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the scoring with 14 points while also adding five assists. Junior guard Lauren Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) scored 11 points. Senior forward Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) added 10 points. Senior forward Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. 

The Leopards were led by freshman guard Isabella Perez (Homestead, Fla.) with 12 points. Junior guard Kayla Kelley (Boston, Mass.) provided nine points off the bench.

Game Review
The Golden Bears got off to a quick start, taking a 13-5 lead within the first three and a half minutes in the game. After a layup by Perez to make the score 13-7, the Golden Bears went on a 14-4 run to close out the quarter to take a 27-11 lead going into the second quarter. Orbann led the way for Western New England, scoring nine of her 11 points in the first quarter.

Western New England picked up where they left off. After a made jump shot by Kelley to begin the quarter, sophomore guard Julia Quinn (Thomaston, Conn.) made a jump shot that would start a 12-2 run, extending the lead and making the score 39-15. The Golden Bears and the Leopards traded baskets the rest of the half, with Western New England taking a 47-22 lead into halftime. 

The Golden Bears would push their lead to 30 midway through the third quarter when Carlson hit a free throw to make the score 57-27. After a few made baskets by Kelley and Perez cut into the Golden Bear lead, a layup by senior forward Alyssa Stefanelli (Chicopee, Mass.) gave Western New England a 66-35 lead heading into the final quarter.

A layup by Wentworth freshman Winnie Kenou (Mattapan, Mass.) at 5:31 left in the fourth quarter made the score 75-43 in favor of Western New England. The Golden Bears went on a 15-0 run to close out the game.

• Western New England is now 4-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play this year.
