Women’s Basketball Continues Strong Run with Win over Curry

MILTON, Mass. (February 8, 2020) – The Western New England University women's basketball team snuck past Curry, 60-52, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon at Katz Gymnasium.
Top Performers
Senior forward Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) led the Golden Bears with 21 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Lauren Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) added 14 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) provided 13 points.
Freshman Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.) led the Colonels with 14 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Katie Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) provided 13 points. Junior Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) grabbed 10 rebounds.
Game Review
The Golden Bears jumped out to an early 5-2 lead over the course of the first few minutes. Western New England held an 11-8 lead with 2:36 remaining in the first quarter. Curry grabbed two baskets before the end of the quarter to take a 12-11 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, Curry pushed their lead to nine points, taking a 25-16 lead after going on an 8-0 scoring run. Chadwick scored 4 points with roughly a minute left in the half to cut the Curry lead to 28-24.
The Golden Bears came out strong to begin the second half, taking a 31-30 lead with 5:56 remaining the quarter. The Colonels took back the lead, going up 37-33. Western New England went on a 6-0 run to take the lead after Farrell made two free throws to end the quarter.
The Golden Bears pushed their lead to six after a made jump shot from Chadwick with 7:24 remaining in the game. The Colonels cut the lead down to two with just under two and a half minutes left. Western New England hit crucial free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
