Women’s Basketball Wins Fourth Straight with 73-55 Win over Curry

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 22, 2020) – The Western New England University won their fourth straight game with a 73-55 win over Curry on Wednesday evening at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Top Performers
The Golden Bears were led by senior guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) who scored 19 points, while grabbing five rebounds and five steals. Senior forward Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) added 10 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Julia Quinn (Thomaston, Conn.) provided 10 points off the bench.

The Colonels had four double digit scorers, junior Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.), freshmen Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.), Kathryn Dunn (Hanson, Mass.), and Lillian Gray (Brooksville, Maine).

Game Review
The Colonels came out strong to begin the game, taking an early 5-0 lead over the Golden Bears. Western New England stormed back to take a 6-5 lead off a layup from Carlson. Curry took the lead back, and with a 10-6 lead, the Golden Bears ripped off a 16-2 run to finish off the quarter.

The Golden Bears picked up where they left off to begin the second quarter. A free throw by senior guard Sydney Fisher (Strafford, N.H.) gave the Golden Bears a 28-18 lead with just under six minutes remaining in the half. The Colonels finished off the half strong, going on a 9-1 run the rest of the half to cut the deficit to two going into halftime.

The Golden Bears came out of halftime and dominated play in the third quarter. Western New England only conceded four points for the first eight minutes to begin the second half, starting the second half on a 17-4 run, taking a 46-31 lead after a 3-pointer by Farrell.

The Golden Bears pushed their lead to as many as 24 points during the fourth quarter when Quinn scored a 3-pointer to give Western New England a 61-37 lead with 7:09 remaining in the game. The Western New England defense held strong the rest of the game to see out a 73-55 victory over Curry to win their fourth straight game.

• Western New England is now 7-0 at home this season.
• The Golden Bear defense held the Colonels to just 29.2% shooting from 3.
