Women’s Tennis Opens Season with 9-0 Win at Northern Vermont-Johnson
Golden Bears defeat Badgers for sixth time in past seven seasons
JOHNSON, Vt. (September 1, 2019) – The Western New England University women's tennis team opened its 2019 season with a 9-0 victory over Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Sunday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Courts.
The Golden Bears set the tone for the match with wins at all three doubles positions. Junior Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) teamed up with senior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) for an 8-0 win over Grace Page and Samantha Kershner at No. 1, while junior Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) and senior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) defeated Iris Serrano and Kayla Hammond 7-2 at No. 2. In the No. 3 spot, sophomores Jennifer Arling (Cromwell, Conn.) and Hailey MacDonald (West Springfield, Mass.) blanked Kristen Tirrito and Katelyn Tirrito, 8-0.
Western New England kept rolling in singles action, as LaPress defeated Page 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 and Schrader cruised past Kershner 6-0, 6-0.
Cote won 6-1, 6-0 over Serrano at No. 3, and Bauer earned a 6-0, 6-0 result over Hammond at No. 4.
In the final two singles positions, sophomore Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 result over Kristen Tirrito, and junior Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Katelyn Tirrito.
