Women’s Tennis Opens CCC Play with 5-1 Victory over Wentworth

Golden Bears improve to 3-0 this season

WESTON, Mass. (September 14, 2019) – The Western New England University women's tennis team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play with a 5-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in a match held at Regis College.

Western New England held a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play, as junior Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) and senior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) teamed up for an 8-3 win over Ali Sollecito and Morgan Collins at No. 1, and the duo of junior Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) and sophomore Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) earned an 8-2 result over Hannah Erickson and CiCi Deakin at No. 3.

Wentworth's lone point of the match came at No. 2 doubles, as Sam McGibbon and Olivia DeLuca edged senior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and junior Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.), 8-7 (10-8).

Following a lengthy rain delay during singles play, Western New England was able to pick up the final three points it needed o clinch the match.

Schrader blanked DeLuca, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, while Martinelli cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Erickson at No. 5 and junior Sydney Lewis (Goffstown, N.H.) sealed the victory with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Deakin at No. 6.

Western New England (3-0) will be back on the road Wednesday at Roger Williams, while Wentworth (2-3) travels to Nichols on Wednesday.
