Women’s Tennis Defeated by Nichols in Home Opener, 9-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 21, 2019) – The Western New England University women's tennis team was defeated by Nichols College, 9-0, in the Golden Bears' 2019 home opener on Saturday at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.

The Bison took control of the match with wins in all three doubles contests. At No. 1, Nichols' duo of Amarie Settiwongse and Isabelle Leonardi topped Western New England senior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and junior Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.), 8-2.

The visitors were also victorious at the No. 2 doubles position, as Megan Nathanson and Rachel McDonald earned an 8-0 result over junior Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) and senior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.). 

In the final doubles matchup, Kara Stankewitz and Lindsey Kaplan of Nichols earned an 8-1 result over junior Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) and sophomore Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.).

The Bison took all six singles matchups to complete the 9-0 sweep. Settiwongse posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over LaPress at No. 1, and Stankewitz registered a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Schrader at No. 2.

In the No. 3 position, Nathanson defeated Cote 6-0, 6-0, while Juliana Herrera won 6-4, 6-0 over Bauer at No. 4.

In the last two singles flights, Kaplan collected a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Martinelli at No. 5, and Leonardi cruised past junior Sydney Lewis (Goffstown, N.H.) by a 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 6.
