Women’s Tennis Falls to Gordon 5-2 in CCC Tournament Quarterfinals

WENHAM, Mass. (October 16, 2019) – The Western New England University women's tennis team was eliminated from the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament with a 5-2 loss to Gordon College in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

The loss ends Western New England's fall season at 5-5. Gordon (7-6) advances to the CCC semifinals to take on top-seeded Nichols College next Tuesday.

The Fighting Scots held a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of doubles play, with Western New England's point coming at the No. 1 position as senior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and junior Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) edged Anne Carsey and Madison West, 8-7 (7-3).

Gordon's No. 3 duo of Anna Mullane and Abigail Graves defeated Western New England sophomore Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) and Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) 8-1, while the Fighting Scots were also victorious at second doubles as Emily Ontiveros and Jordyn Maddex topped WNE junior Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) and senior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) by an 8-0 score.

Western New England was able to tie the match at 2-2 as Schrader opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 result over West at No. 2, but the home team clinched the match with wins by Maddex, Carsey, and Mullane at No. 3, No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.
