Women’s Tennis Wins 7-2 Over Sage

Golden Bears improve to 2-0 this season

ALBANY, N.Y. (September 8, 2019) – The Western New England University women's tennis team prevailed 7-2 over the Sage Colleges on Sunday afternoon at the Albany Academies.

Western New England led 2-1 after doubles play with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Senior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and junior Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) rolled to an 8-1 triumph over Abbey Clobridge and Sadie Dunne at the top spot, while junior Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) and sophomore Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) teamed up to earn an 8-6 result over Alison Trudo and Molly Cochrane at No. 3.

Sage's No. 2 duo of Rebecca Jackson and Taylor Gillespie got the Gators on the board as they edged senior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and junior Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.), 8-7 (10-8).

The Golden Bears cruised in singles play, winning five of six matchups. LaPress downed Clobridge 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at No. 1, and Schrader was victorious by a 6-0, 6-1 score over Jackson at No. 2.

Cote came away with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over Dunne at No. 3, while Bauer and Martinelli picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

The Gators earned their lone singles point at the final slot, as Cochrane posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over junior Sydney Lewis (Goffstown, N.H.).
