Women’s Tennis Prevails 5-4 over Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. (September 28, 2019) – The Western New England University women's tennis team earned a 5-4 victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Leroy Avenue Courts.

Western New England built a 2-1 lead through doubles play, which proved to be the difference in the match as the Golden Bears and Seahawks split the six singles matchups.

Western New England's top doubles duo of Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) and Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) defeated Shealyn FitzPatrick and Lauren Harvey, 8-4.

Senior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) and junior Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) cruised past Lily Gorman and Annemarie Haas 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, but the Seahawks picked up a point at the No. 3 spot as Priscilla Gaspard and Makenzie Sadler edged junior Kyra Palumbo (Albany, N.Y.) and sophomore Janet Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) by an 8-6 score.

In singles action, Western New England was victorious No. 2, as Schrader beat Sadler 6-1, 6-1. Bauer posted her second point of the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Gaspard at No. 4, and junior Sydney Lewis (Goffstown, N.H.) rallied to earn a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 result over Nina Branch at No. 6.

At the other three singles positions, Harvey won 6-1, 6-1 over LaPress at No. 1, Casey Farrell topped Cote 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, and Haas collected a 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) 1-0 (10-8) victory over Martinelli at No. 5.
