Women’s Tennis Takes 5-0 Win over Curry

LUDLOW, Mass. (October 2, 2019) – The Western New England University women's tennis team secured a 5-0 win over Curry College on Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Ludlow Tennis Club.

At No. 1 doubles, Western New England senior Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and junior Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) came away with an 8-3 win over Sophia Wiernusz and Alison Daigle.

The Golden Bears were also victorious at No. 2 doubles, as junior Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) and senior Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) edged Natalie Valvo and Kelsie Merrill, 8-7 (7-3). Western New England took third doubles by default.

In singles play, junior Sydney Lewis (Goffstown, N.H.) cruised past Kayla Connors 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 position, and Western New England took sixth singles by default to clinch the victory. 

A pair of singles matchups did not finish, as LaPress led Wiernusz 2-1 at No. 1 and Schrader held a 5-0 advantage over Daigle at No. 2. Third and fourth singles were not started as the match was played to decision.

Western New England (5-3, 3-3 CCC) hosts Endicott in a Homecoming contest on Saturday at noon, while Curry (0-13, 0-6 CCC) travels to Salem State tomorrow.
