Western New England Opens Fall Schedule at Bill Detrick Invitational

Golden Bears sit in eighth place after round one with score of 400

NEWINGTON, Conn. (September 10, 2016) – The two-time defending Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) champion Western New England University men's golf team opened its fall 2016 schedule today with the first round of the Bill Detrick Invitational, hosted by Trinity College at Indian Hill Country Club.

Western New England sits in eighth place in the 11-team field after the first round with a 40-over par score of 400. Trinity has an 11-stroke lead after the opening round with a 12-over 372. Taylor Nordan of Tufts University is alone atop the leaderboard after shooting a one-under 71.

Top Performers
• Senior Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) led the way for the Golden Bears during round one, as he shot a five-over 77 that has him in a tie for 17th place in the 66-player field.
• Junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) turned in a seven-over 79, placing him in a tie for 26th.
• Junior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) posted an opening round score of 80 and is tied for 32nd.
