Endicott Edges Western New England by One Stroke for CCC Title

Ciolek leads four Golden Bears in top ten, placing third with two-day total of 149

LONGMEADOW, Mass. (April 30, 2017) – The Western New England University men's golf team came up one stroke short of capturing its third straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title on Sunday, as Endicott College held on for a narrow victory following the second round of the tournament at Twin Hills Country Club.

The Golden Bears, who trailed the Gulls by five strokes with a score of 309 after opening round play on Saturday, turned in a 298 today with all five players improving on their round one efforts. Endicott's second round 302 proved to be enough, however, as the Gulls finished with a two-day total of 606, one shot better than Western New England's 607. Nichols College finished third (617), and the University of New England (668) rounded out the four-team field. Nichols freshman Patrick Hesseltine earned medalist honors after registering a three-under par 68 on Sunday and finishing with a two-day score of 143.

• Junior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.), Western New England's round one leader with a score of 76, posted a two-over par 73 today and finished third overall in the 20-player field with a two-day total of 149 (76+73).
• Junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) followed up Saturday's 76 with a 75 in round two and placed fifth overall with a combined score of 151.
• Senior Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.) finished one stroke back of Abbott in sixth place after posting a three-over par 74 on Sunday and completing the tournament with a score of 152.
• Junior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) was the fourth Golden Bear to place inside the top ten as he finished in a three-way tie for seventh with scores of 79 Saturday and 76 on Sunday for a total of 155.
• Senior Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) followed up his round one score of 83 with a 76 today and finished with a 36-hole total of 159, good for 13th overall.
