Golden Bears Register Fourth Straight Tournament Victory at JWU Wildcat Spring Invitational

Metcalf & Abbott place second and third, respectively

CRANSTON, R.I. (April 23, 2017) – The Western New England University men's golf team remains undefeated this spring, as the Golden Bears won their fourth straight tournament with a seven-stroke victory at the Johnson & Wales University Wildcat Spring Invitational on Sunday at Cranston Country Club.

Western New England, which led second place Babson College by one stroke entering Sunday's after turning in a team score of 309 during round one on Saturday, posted a 303 on Sunday to win the tournament by seven strokes. Babson finished second with a score of 619, while Tufts University (622), Rhode Island College (627) and host Johnson & Wales (636) rounded out the top five. Owen Elliott of Tufts claimed medalist honors with a combined score of 150 (76+74), edging out Western New England junior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) by one stroke.

Top Performers
• Metcalf, who was tied for seventh place after shooting a 77 during round one yesterday, fired a 74 today and climbed five spots into second place in the 85-player field with a two-day score of 151.
• Junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) duplicated his 76 from round one and finished right behind Metcalf in third place with a score of 152.
• Senior Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who sat in tie for 29th after turning in an 81 during Saturday's action, jumped all the way up to 13th with a score of 76 today and finished with a two-day total of 157.

Also Competing for Western New England
• Senior Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.), Western New England's day one leader with a four-over par 75, was able to secure a tenth place finish after firing an 81 today.
• Junior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) posted a two-day total of 158, good for 20th overall, after following up Saturday's 81 with a 77 on Sunday.

Western New England will look to keep rolling next weekend, when the Golden Bears aim for their third consecutive Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) title at Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow, Mass.
