Metcalf leading Western New England with five-over par 77

BREWSTER, Mass. (October 23, 2016) – The Western New England University men's golf team sits in fifth place after the opening round of the 82nd Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship, which is being held at The Captains Course in Brewster, Mass.

The Golden Bears posted a team score of 318, good for fifth place in the 20-team field. Nichols (307) holds a four-stroke lead over both Husson and Babson, while Salem State (315) occupies fourth place with a three-stroke edge over Western New England. Zachary Temple of Castleton tops the individual leaderboard after shooting a one-over par 73.

Top Performers
• Junior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) led a balanced Western New England effort, firing a five-over 77 that has him tied for 11th in the 99-player field.
• Senior Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) each posted scores of 78, placing them in a tie for 15th.
