Western New England in 16th Place After Round One of Duke Nelson Invitational

Junior John Abbott leading Golden Bears in 39th place after shooting 78

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (September 17, 2016) – The Western New England University men's golf team returned to action today with the opening round of the 33rd Duke Nelson Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College at The Ralph Myhre Golf Course.

The Golden Bears sit in 16th place among 22 teams after shooting an opening round score of 317. Skidmore College (296) has a one-stroke lead over Middlebury (297), with Amherst (302) rounding out the top three. Skidmore's Mackenzie Nelson tops the individual leaderboard with his opening round, one-under par 70.

Top Performers
• Junior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) is leading the way for the Golden Bears after day one with his seven-over par 78.
• Senior Matt Fontaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) are tied for 47th after turning in matching 79s today.

Also Competing for Western New England
• Senior Nick Shemkovitz (Meriden, Conn.) fired a ten-over 81, good for 68th overall, while junior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) posted an 89 and sits in 110th place.
