Assumption Tops Western New England with Pair of Late Goals, 3-1

O'Dea nets Golden Bears lone tally in first period   

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (December 8, 2016) – Assumption College scored the go-ahead goal with 4:56 remaining in regulation and added another 34 seconds later on its way to a 3-1 victory over Western New England University this evening in non-conference men's ice hockey action at the Olympia Ice Center.

Top Performers
• Sophomore forward Matt O'Dea (Orland Park, Ill.) scored Western New England's lone goal in the first period and finished with four shots.

• Freshman defenseman Matt Drake (Manchester, N.J.) netted the game-winner for Assumption, before registering an assist on the Greyhounds' final tally.
• Senior goaltender Nick Commeso (Marshfield, Mass.) made 40 saves and stopped all 24 of the shots that he faced over the final 40 minutes.

Game Review
• O'Dea staked the Golden Bears to a 1-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season 13 minutes into the contest.
• Assumption pulled even at the 8:44 mark of the second period, as senior forward Stephen Picard (Enfield, Conn.) scored a short-handed goal on a feed from junior Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Mass.).
• The score remained tied until the late stages of the contest, when Drake found the back of the net with the goal that would stand as the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining. Less than a minute later, Drake fired a shot off the post and senior Paul Amarone (Hamden, Conn.) cleaned up the rebound to extend the final margin to two.

Notes
• The Golden Bears outshot Assumption 41-23 and held a 31-30 edge in the faceoff circle.
• Western New England sophomore goaltender Kevin Gollmer (Flourtown, Pa.) finished with 20 saves.
• Neither team was able to convert with a man advantage, going a combined 0-for-8 on the power play.
• O'Dea's four goals are good for second on the team through 12 games.

Western New England (4-7-1) will be off for almost a month before opening its second semester slate against Worcester State on January 5. Assumption (5-8-1) returns to action on January 6 against Franklin Pierce.
