Western New England Falls to No. 18 SUNY Cortland, 16-8

Red Dragons use 7-0 second half run to pull away from Golden Bears

CORTLAND, N.Y. (March 10, 2017) – The Western New England University men's lacrosse team suffered a 16-8 setback to No. 18 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland this afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex.

Top Performers
• Freshman midfielder Nick Gamba (East Islip, N.Y.) led the Western New England offense with two goals and one assist, while sophomore Jared Ward (Littleton, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and junior Nicholas Beauchamp (Wilbraham, Mass.) totaled three points with one goal and two assists.
• Freshman Oskar Djusberg (Abington, Mass.) finished with a team-high seven ground balls.

• Cortland was led by junior Thomas McNaney (Marcellus, N.Y.), who totaled a game-high seven points (two goals, five assists), and junior Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette, N.Y.), who tallied three goals.

Game Review
• After Gamba scored on a feed from Beauchamp to tie the contest at 1-1 midway through the first quarter, Cortland reeled off three straight goals and led 5-2 after 15 minutes of play.
• McNaney, Beresovoy and senior Andrew Gonzalez (Sayville, N.Y.) all found the back of the net for the Red Dragons in the second quarter, while Ward netted a man-up goal late in the period to cut Western New England's deficit to four (8-4) at halftime.
• Senior Frank Medlicott's (Stanwood, Wash.) sixth goal of the season at the 12:25 mark of the third quarter had the Golden Bears within three (8-5), but that would be as close as they got. The Red Dragons closed out the frame with six straight goals, including two man-up tallies from Beresovoy, to claim a 14-5 advantage heading into the fourth.
• Western New England outscored Cortland 3-2 in the final period with goals from Gamba, Beauchamp and freshman Liam Baker (Mount Laurel, N.J.).

Notes
• Cortland outshot Western New England 46-25 and held a 16-12 edge at the faceoff X.
• This afternoon's contest served as a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament first round matchup, which the Red Dragons won 13-5.
• Beauchamp and Medlicott are tied for the team lead with six goals each this season.

Western New England (0-4) will be back in action on Monday night to take on Nazareth at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., before traveling to Tampa, Fla. next Friday.
