Field Hockey Handles Salve Regina, Picks Up Big CCC Win

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 8, 2022) – The Western New England field hockey team came away with a four-goal victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating the hosting Seahawks of Salve Regina University by a final score of 6-2. Both Emily Campbell and Taylor Klesyk punched home two goals for WNE in the win.

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-3, 2-1 CCC
  • Salve Regina University: 4-7, 1-3 CCC

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears wasted little time in a crucial CCC contest to get on the board when Haley Kaczka ripped a shot into the back of the net to give Western New England the early 1-0 lead. After a pass from Olivia Eastman, Kaczka deflected the ball into the back of the net to get the Golden Bears on the board and pick up their first lead of the game. WNE did not take long to get on the board for the second time in the afternoon after Emily Campbell found the back of the net to extend Western New England's lead. Again, with would be Olivia Eastman who would find Campbell who sent the ball into the goal. After a quick chance from the Seahawks, Western New England would bring the ball down the field and it would be Emily Campbell, again, who dished the ball into the back of the goal to triple Western New England's lead, giving the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead. Salve Regina would find the net when Julia Decker swiped a shot past Zoey Wexler to get Salve on the board, with Western New England still leading 3-1. The scoring would conclude there, with Western New England leading 5-3 in shots and would take the only three penalty corners in the quarter.

Both goalkeepers would exchange saves to begin the second quarter, when both Casey Febus and Zoey Wexler made big saves to keep their opponents off the scoreboard.  The Golden Bears would see the better of the chances in the second quarter, shooting 13 times towards goal in the second 15 minutes of play. At the end of the second quarter, with just 32 seconds to play, Taylor Klesyk would receive a pass from Kara Edwards and slot the ball into the net to give Western New England a 4-1 lead, a lead which WNE took into halftime.

Western New England saw the majority of the offense to begin the third quarter, which resulted in another goal for WNE and another goal in the contest for Taylor Klesyk to give the Golden Bears a 5-1 lead. Western New England would continue to put the pressure on Salve Regina, taking shot after shot, though the goaltending tandem for the Seahawks stood tall, holding WNE to five goals through three periods of play. WNE outshot Salve Regina 8-2 in the third quarter.

Two goals were had in the fourth quarter, one by each team. WNE was able to pick up their sixth and final goal of the game when Emma Karamian picked up her first collegiate point and first collegiate goal to extend WNE's lead to 6-1. Olyvia Whyte picked up an assist on the play to give the Golden Bears a five-goal lead. Salve Regina would add one mark at the midway point of the fourth quarter, though it would be all the Seahawks would get as WNE would come away with a four-goal lead, winning 6-2 in CCC play.
