Miguel’s Game Winning First Career Goal Gives Field Hockey 2-1 Win over Mount Holyoke

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 20, 2022) – The Western New England field hockey team took to the road on Thursday night, visiting the Lyons of Mount Holyoke College. WNE stuffed the stat sheet and came away with a 2-1 win over the Lyons after Taylor Klesyk and Grace Miugel would propel the Golden Bears to a win.

Records:

  • Western New England: 7-5
  • Mount Holyoke: 3-10

How it Happened:
Western New England would jump to the offensive end of the field early in the contest and would not look back, dominating for much of the contest. Sarah Johnston came away with an early shot, though Rachel Katzenberg, Mount Holyoke goalkeeper, was equal to the task. Olyvia Whyte and Olivia Eastman would be all over the ball on the offensive end, coming away with shots on goal, though could not find the back of the net. Western New England would eventually crack the code and find goal when Taylor Klesyk ripped home her 8thgoal of the season after three consecutive saves by Katzenberg. Klesyk would be able to pick up the rebound and smash it into the back of the net to give Western New England the lead.

Mount Holyoke would surprise the Golden Bears and came away with a goal of their own with just 56 seconds to play in the first quarter. Phoebe Aaronson would assist Mollee Malboeuf's 7th goal of the season to even the score at one after one quarter of play. WNE outshot Mount Holyoke 9-2 in the first quarter.

Western New England would control much of the play again in the second quarter, though neither team could come away with a goal. Sarah Johnston, Haley Kaczka, and Olyvia Whyte would come away with shots in the second for WNE. Mount Holyoke was awarded with three penalty corners while WNE took two.

Play would continue to favor Western New England as the Golden Bears would come away with multiple shots and penalty corners to open the third quarter. Into the later stages of the third, Carly Anna-Barba would come away with an assist on Grace Miguel's first career goal to give Western New England a 2-1 lead. WNE would take the lead into the quarter after Mount Holyoke would make a late push in the quarter, though came up empty.

Western New England would take control of the fourth quarter and would come away with the win. WNE allowed just one shot to MHC in the fourth quarter before taking control of the action. WNE would shoot twice in the fourth, though needed to score no goals in the quarter to come away with the victory, which the Golden Bears did by a final score of 2-1.
