Klesyk Reaches 100 Career Point Milestone in Shutout Win Over Clark University

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 25, 2022) – The Western New England field hockey team saw graduate student Taylor Klesyk reach the 100-point milestone in her career, collecting two goals to send the Golden Bears to a 5-0 win over the visiting Cougars of Clark University. 

Records:

  • Western New England: 9-5
  • Clark University: 6-11

How it Happened:
The Golden Bears outshot the visiting Clark University Cougars 5-1 through the opening 15 minutes of play, though neither team could come away with an opening tally to start the first quarter. Both Loren Root for Clark and Zoey Wexler for WNE would make one save each in the first quarter to keep Clark off the scoreboard. 

Western New England would come away with their first goal of the game just 44 seconds into the second quarter when the Golden Bears were awarded with a penalty stroke. Senior Abby Burns stepped by a took a shot that deflected off the pads of Root and into the back of the net, giving Western New England a 1-0 lead. Burns nabs her first goal of the season after being named to the NFHCA Senior Game last week. The Golden Bears would take it to Clark in the second, controlling much of the play. Clark would get two chances at goal, though Zoey Wexler would make two big saves for WNE to keep the Cougars off the board. WNE would pick up a penalty corner with just over a minute to play in the second quarter. Abby Burns would stop the penalty corner inserted by Carly-Anna BarbaBurns would see her shot get tipped down in front by Emily Campbell, who gave WNE a two-goal lead. Campbell picks up her ninth goal of the season. WNE would lead in shots 11-3 through 30 minutes of play. 

WNE needed all of 33 seconds to get on the board in the third quarter when Sarah Johnston picked up her 8th goal of the season after Haley Kaczka sent a pass to Johnston, who sent the ball into the back of the net to triple WNE's lead. WNE's Taylor Klesyk would be the next to score in the game, as Klesyk would be chasing 100 points in her career in the game. With the goal, Klesyk would come away with points 98 and 99 in her career. Abby Burns would come away with another assist on the night, her second of the game. 

With time expiring in the third quarter, Emily Campbell would find Taylor Klesyk with a loose by in front. Klesyk would dish home her second goal of the game, picking up her 100th career point of her career. Klesyk would become the 5th Golden Bear to reach the 100-point plateau. Western New England took 10 shots in the third quarter while Clark took just two. 

Neither team would come away with a goal in the final 15 minutes of the contest as Clark University would take the 5-1 shots advantage, though Zoey Wexler came away with three saves in the quarter to complete the shutout as Western New England would take a 5-0 victory from Clark. 

Inside the Lines:

  • Taylor Klesyk became the 5th Golden Bear in WNE Field Hockey history to reach 100 career points after picking up two goals in the win. 
  • Abby Burns led WNE with a goal and an assist in the contest, picking up her first goal of the season. 
  • The WNE defense saw Emma Karamian pick up two defensive saves in the win. 
  • Zoey Wexler came through with five saves on five shots on goal for Clark. Wexler picks up her fourth shutout of the season.
