Burns Named CCC Defensive Player of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 31, 2022) – The Commonwealth Coast Conference announced their weekly awards on Monday, naming Western New England Field Hockey defender Abby Burns as the CCC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week. 

Western New England picked up three wins on the week, going 2-0 in non-conference action while also wrapping up CCC play with a 4-0 win over Gordon College. Burns helped the Golden Bears defeat Clark University by a final score of 5-0 last Tuesday night. Burns collected a goal and two assists in the contest, good for four points. The senior defender scored on a penalty stroke to open the scoring, which eventually would be the game winning goal.

Burns then helped to guide WNE Field Hockey to a 2-0 shutout victory over Springfield College, picking up their second straight shutout of the season. WNE finished their week with a 4-0 win over Gordon College, allowing zero goals on the week, led by the defense from Burns. In the win at Gordon, Burns tallied another penalty stroke goal that helped the Golden Bears defeat the Fighting Scots, locking up third place in the CCC tournament. On the season, the Hooksett, N.H. native collected two goals and four assists, good for eight points on the season. 

Burns and the Golden Bears travel to the second seeded Gulls of Endicott College for the CCC semifinals on Thursday, November 3 for a 7:00 pm contest. WNE meets Endicott for the second straight season in the CCC semifinals.
