Field Hockey Locks Up Three Seed in CCC Tournament after 4-0 Win at Gordon College

WENHAM, Mass. (October 29, 2022) – The Western New England field hockey team took care of business on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Fighting Scots of Gordon College by a final score of 4-0. With the win, WNE automatically moves into the CCC semifnals and will take on Endicott College. 

Records:

  • Western New England: 11-5, 4-2 CCC
  • Gordon College: 2-14, 0-6 CCC

How it Happened:

Western New England would dominate the offensive side of the ball for a full 60 minutes of play in a total team effort. The Golden Bears would come up empty in the first 15 minutes of play on the goal column, though had plenty of chances to score. Taylor Klesyk, Olivia Eastman, Grace Miguel, Haley Kaczka, Sarah Johnston, and Olyvia Whyte all took shots towards goal in the opening quarter as Western New England outshot Gordon 9-0. 

WNE came through with their first goal of the game early in the second quarter off a penalty corner. After the ball was delivered to Carly-Anna Barba, she would send a quick pass to Emily Campbell who slotted the ball into the net to give WNE a 1-0 lead. The scoring would not stop there as late in the second quarter, Abby Burns would slip by her second goal of the season on an unassisted mark to give WNE a 2-0 lead. WNE would pour on the goal as just under a minute later, Emily Campbell would score her second of the game and 11thgoal of the season to give Western New England a 3-0 lead.  WNE took 19 shots in the second quarter when Sophea Zaskoda making ten saves, letting three goals by. 

WNE would score one final tally in the third quarter when Sarah Johnston put together an unassisted marker to give Western New England a 4-0 lead. WNE would shoot 11 times in the third quarter, coming away with the one goal. Zaskoda made an extra five saves in the third, coming away with 18 total saves in the game. WNE crusie in the fourth quarter, allowing zero Fighting Scots shots in the game, winning 4-0. 

Around the Lines:

  • Emily Campbell led the way for WNE, coming away with two goals on the afternoon, completing the regular season with 11 markers. 
  • WNE took 41 shots in the game while holding Gordon College to zero. 
  • The Golden Bears were awarded with 30 penalty corners while Gordon took just three.
  • Gordon goalkeeping made 18 saves in their final game of the season.

  • Gordon College, who won their first two games of the season, dropped their final 14 games of the year, ending their season at 2-14.
