Worcester State Pulls Away for 66-54 Win over Golden Bears

Lancers outscore WNE by ten in fourth quarter

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 20, 2018) – The Worcester State University women's basketball team outscored Western New England University by ten points in the fourth quarter to claim a 66-54 victory over the Golden Bears on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Brissette Court.

Top Performers
Junior guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) led the Golden Bears with 15 points, four assists and two rebounds.

Junior forward Meghan Orbann (Easthampton, Conn.) finished with 11 points, seven boards, two steals and one assist, while sophomore forward Emily Scurka (Billerica, Mass.) chipped in with nine points and five rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

Worcester State senior center Brittany Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) paced three Lancers in double figures with a game-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Herring also produced seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Senior forward Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Kate Surprenant (Pelham, N.H.) added 12 points, four boards and four assists.

Game Review
The Lancers, who led 14-13 after the first quarter, outscored the Golden Bears 22-8 in the second period to open up a 36-21 cushion at the break. Western New England was held scoreless over the final 3:47 of the half.

The Golden Bears fought their way back into the game with a 17-4 third quarter edge. Western New England, which closed out the frame with an 8-0 run, limited Worcester State to 1-of-10 shooting in the period.

The Golden Bears were still within two (42-40) following a Scurka layup with just under nine minutes remaining in the game, but Worcester State took control with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to expand its cushion to ten (50-40).

Western New England was unable to get closer than seven points the rest of the way as Worcester State posted a double-digit triumph.

• Western New England was limited to 31.9% shooting, including 23.8% from three-point range.
• The Golden Bears turned the ball over just seven times while scoring 21 points off 12 Worcester State turnovers.
