Defense & Rebounding Help Golden Bears Earn 67-37 Win over Wentworth

Western New England controls the glass with 56-26 rebounding advantage

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 22, 2019) – The Western New England University women's basketball team used strong defense and a dominant rebounding performance to earn a 67-37 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Top Performers
Western New England was led by junior guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.), who scored a team-high 15 points and dished out four assists.

Junior Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) finished two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 11 boards, while sophomore Lauren Chadwick (Gardiner, Maine) chipped in with nine points, five boards, one steal and one assist.

Wentworth sophomore guard Erin Morton (Norway, Maine) was the Leopards lone double figure scorer with ten points. Morton also recorded three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Sophomore Stephanie Mini (Topsfield, Mass.) finished with eight points, five rebounds, three blocks and two assists for the Leopards.

Game Review
Western New England led 14-7 after one quarter despite shooting just 5-for-17 (29.4%) in the opening frame. After Mini put Wentworth ahead 7-6 with a jumper midway through the period, the Golden Bears posted an 8-0 run the rest of the way to establish a seven-point advantage through ten minutes.

Western New England's lead reached double figures (23-11) for the first time when junior Sydney Fisher (Strafford, N.H.) knocked down a three-pointer with 5:44 left in the half. Fisher's triple came as part of a 14-0 run that saw the Golden Bears stretch their cushion to 20 (31-11) following a Chadwick layup at the 3:26 mark. Western New England would go on to lead by the same margin (33-13) at halftime.

The Golden Bears scored the first six points of the third quarter before the Leopards started to pick it up offensively, posting a 10-2 run to get back to within 18 (41-23). Despite the surge, Wentworth still faced a 22-point deficit (52-30) heading into the fourth quarter.

Western New England continued to pull away down the stretch with its reserves in the game, as the Golden Bears extended the final margin to 30.

• Western New England limited Wentworth to 27.5 percent shooting and the Golden Bears outrebounded the Leopards 56-26.
• With the victory, the Golden Bears extended their winning streak against the Leopards to 11 games dating back to the 2013-14 campaign.
