Big First Half Fuels Western New England’s 74-49 Win at Wentworth

Orbann leads Golden Bears with career-high 24 points

BOSTON, Mass. (December 1, 2018) – The Western New England University women's basketball team opened up a 22-point halftime lead en route to a 74-49 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Tansey Gymnasium.

Top Performers
Junior forward Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) led the way for the Golden Bears, making 5-of-8 shots from beyond the arc on her way to a career-high 24 points. Orbann also tied for the team-high with nine boards and recorded two assists, one steal and one block.

Junior forward Courtney Carlson (Woodbury, Conn.) finished one rebound shy of her third career double-double with 11 points and nine boards, while junior guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) chipped in with eight points, a career-high nine assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Wentworth sophomore guard Erin Morton (Norway, Maine) paced the Leopards with a team-high 12 points, seven assists and six boards.

Game Review
Western New England was in control from the outset, as the Golden Bears opened the contest with a 9-0 run over the first three minutes of play with offensive contributions from Orbann, Farrell, Carlson and junior Alyssa Stefanelli (Chicopee, Mass.).

The Leopards cut their deficit to four (12-8) with 3:25 left in the opening period after junior guard Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) knocked down a three-pointer, but Western New England outscored Wentworth 10-2 the rest of the way with the help of seven points from Orbann to establish a 22-10 edge through ten minutes.

The Golden Bears continued to add to their advantage in the second quarter, with the lead reaching 20 (35-15) on a made layup by Carlson with 2:32 left in the half. Late triples from Orbann and junior Sydney Fisher (Strafford, N.H.) gave Western New England a comfortable 43-21 cushion at the break.

The visitors held their largest lead of the game (48-21) following another Orbann three-pointer less than two minutes into the second half.

Wentworth was unable to get closer than 19 points over the remainder of the contest as Western New England went on to claim a 25-point triumph.
