Golden Bears Fall on the Road at Curry, 58-52

Orbann posts fourth career double-double with 14 points & 12 rebounds

MILTON, Mass. (January 12, 2019) – The Western New England University women's basketball team was outscored by 14 points in the fourth quarter as Curry College rallied to earn a 58-52 win over the Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Katz Gymnasium.

Top Performers
Junior forward Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) led the way for Western New England, posting her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career with team-highs in both points (14) and rebounds (12).

Junior guard Emily Farrell (New Fairfield, Conn.) finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while sophomore forward Emily Scurka (Billerica, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points and eight boards off the bench.

Curry freshman center Peyton Perine (Fairfax, Va.) scored a game-high 20 points to go with six rebounds and two assists.

Senior guard Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) turned in a 17-point, 16-rebound, seven-assist effort for the Colonels.

Game Review
Western New England trailed 15-11 with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter, before the Golden Bears closed out the frame with a 9-0 run to claim a 20-15 lead through ten minutes of play.

The Colonels tied the score on two occasions in the second quarter, the second of which came on an Irwin jumper that knotted the score at 27-27 with 2:44 on the clock. Neither team was able to score the rest of the way as the two teams were deadlocked at the break.

Western New England surged back ahead in the third quarter, outscoring Curry 15-7 in the frame to take a 42-34 cushion into the fourth.

Curry began to chip away at its deficit early in the fourth, as the Colonels pulled to within three (44-41) on an Irwin triple before tying the contest when senior Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) connected from long range with 7:02 on the clock.  

Curry's run continued as the home team scored the next six points to go up 50-44 before a Scurka layup ended Western New England's drought with 4:31 remaining.

Western New England trailed by the same margin (52-48) after another Scurka layup almost two minutes later, but the Golden Bears were unable to get closer as the Colonels tacked on six late free throws to seal the win.

Notes
• Western New England was limited to 29.5 percent shooting from the field, while Curry connected at 31.4 percent.
• The Golden Bears held a 52-48 rebounding advantage, led by Orbann and junior Sydney Fisher (Strafford, N.H.), who grabbed a career-high ten boards.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, as Western New England (9-6, 4-4 CCC) begins a four-game homestand against Trinity and Curry (8-7, 5-2 CCC) hosts Wentworth.
