Wrestling Takes Down Rhode Island College on Alumni Appreciation Night, 29-11

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England University wrestling team built a 20-3 lead en route to an eventual 29-11 victory over Rhode Island College on Friday night at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.

Freshman Corey Cope (Quakertown, Pa.) got the Golden Bears off to a strong start with his 16-0 technical fall victory over Brandon Nunez at 125.

Junior Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) followed by pinning Franky Roman in the 133-pound bout to give the Golden Bears an 11-0 lead, before the Anchormen got on the board as Nathan Lackman won a 3-0 decision over junior Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) at 141.

Leading 11-3, Western New England added to its advantage as junior Chris Gresis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) posted a 16-1 technical fall triumph over Eric Zane at 149.

Junior Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) made it 20-3 with his 13-4 major decision win over Sean Caltagirone at 157, before the Anchormen took three of the next four matches to cut their deficit to 23-12.

In the final bout of the evening, freshman Romelo Medina (Springfield, Mass.) pinned Travis Manick in the first period of the heavyweight contest.
