Arborio, Boyle, & Monteiro Among Twelve Golden Bears Honored by NWCA & NEWA

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 30, 2020) – Twelve members of the Western New England University wrestling team were recognized with end of season awards from the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA).

Juniors Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) and Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) headlined Western New England's list of honorees, as both received All-NEWA first team selections.

Arborio went 21-0 at 125 lbs. and went on a 21 match win streak in route to his Northeast Regional title. He was the first Golden Bear since Jamison Sacco in 2013 to win the Northeast Regional title. Arborio was the three seed at the NCAA National Championships and ranked 3rd in the country.

Monteiro, competing at 157 lbs, led the team in wins (31) and winning percentage (88.5). Monteiro is now a two-time NCAA National Qualifier. He was ranked as high as 6th in the country this year and had wins over multiple All-American, including the returning national finalist from Mount Union.

Senior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) was selected to the All-NEWA second team as well as being named a NWCA Scholar All-American. Boyle ends his career with a 107-25 record. He is a three-time NCAA National Qualifier and three-time Scholar All-American. This season, Boyle was 24-4 and was ranked as #1 in the country.

Earning NWCA Scholar All-American recognition along with Boyle were senior Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) and junior Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.).

Starr received All-NEWA Honorable Mention recognition after earning NCAA All-Region honors after placing sixth at the Northeast Regional Championships.

DeLucia also earned All-NEWA Honorable Mention recognition after placing seventh at the Northeast Regional Championships.

Freshman Corey Cope (Quakertown, Pa.) landed on the All-NEWA Rookie Team after a strong campaign in which he went 21-14 competing at both 125 and 133 pounds.

Finally, Boyle, Cope, DeLucia, and Starr garnered NEWA All-Academic honors, along with seniors Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, Mass.), DJ Tartsinis (Colchester, Conn.), and Austin Roche (Southborough, Mass.), and freshmen Jackson Archer (Lebanon, Conn.), Alec Arnold (Wethersfield, Conn.), and Sean Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.).
