Arborio, Boyle, and Monteiro Qualify for Nationals as Wrestling Competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 2, 2020) – The Western New England University wrestling competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships over the weekend at Rhode Island College.

The Golden Bears had five All NCAA Northeast Regional place winners. While at the Championships, Coach Sugermeyer was named 2020 Northeast Regional Coach of the Year.

For their performance over the course of the Championships, junior Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.), senior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.), and junior Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) qualified to compete at the NCAA National Championships.

Arborio won the 125 pound weight class. He secured a 18-0 technical fall over Will Jarvis (Plymouth St.) in the opening round and followed that up with a win in the quarterfinals over Amir Daouk (Wesleyan). In the semifinal, Arborio won a 7-1 decision over Tyler Crew (Nyu), and then won a 6-4 decision over Peter Del Gallo (Southern Maine) in the 1st place match. 

Junior Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) secured three wins on his way to finishing seventh place in the 141 pound weight class. DeLucia defeated Andrew Hennessy (Wesleyan), Carter Lewis (WPI), and Nick Wagner (Roger Williams).

Senior Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) also secured three wins on his way to finishing in sixth in the 149 pound weight class. Starr grabbed wins over Ja'Mon Van Heyningen (Rhode Island College), Albert Xing (Williams), and Ronan Bell (WPI). 

Monteiro won five matches on his way to finishing third in the 157 pound weight class. Monteiro secured wins over Mannash Carlson (New England College), Jack Kelly (Roger Willams), Nicolas Monteleone (Springfield), Kevin Lyskawa (Trinity), and Chase Lind (WPI) in the third place match.

Boyle won four of his five matches on his way to finishing in third place in the 184 pound weight class. Boyle grabbed wins over Evan Frank (Trinity), Anthony Malfitano (Roger Williams), Giovanni Santiago (JWU (Providence)), and Josh Smith (Southern Maine) in the third place match.
