Wrestling Places Fourth at NEWA Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (January 19, 2020) – The Western New England University wrestling team placed fourth at the NEWA Dual Meet Championships at the PC&T Field House on Sunday. This is the highest placement at the NEWA Championships in program history.

On the way to fourth place, the Golden Bears beat Rhode Island College, 50-6, followed by beating Springfield College, 21-18, in the quarterfinal match. Western New England fell to #10 Coast Guard in the semifinal match before falling to Roger Williams in the third place match.

Against Rhode Island College, the Golden Bears won all but one weight class. In the match against Springfield College, Western New England won six of the weight classes. 

Senior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) picked up the 100th win of his career with an 11-1 major decision victory over Eli Wilson of Roger Williams.

Junior Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) went 4-0 for the tournament, earning major decisions in every match. For his performance in the tournament, Arborio was named to the NEWA All-Tournament team. Since moving down to 125, Arborio is undefeated, going 10-0.

On top of an already special day for the team, assistant coach Dwayne Dawson was inducted into the New England Wrestling Association Hall of Fame. Dawson has been dedicated to wrestling in New England for over 30 years. This season is Dawson's 30th year as an assistant coach at Western New England University including being the co-interim head coach in 2004-2005. At Western New England, Dawson has mentored and coached 9 NCAA All Americans including the school's first ever NCAA National Champion and over 100 New England and Regional place winners.
