Wrestling Competes at Williams College Open

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. (January 5, 2020) – The Western New England University wrestling team competed for the first time in 2020 at the Williams College Open on Sunday at Lasell Gymnasium.

Three Golden Bears won their respective weight classes – junior Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.) at 125 pounds, junior Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.) at 157 pounds, and senior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.) at 184 pounds.

Arborio took down two wrestlers ranked in the Top 25 by d3wrestle.com on his way to winning the weight class. In the semi-finals, Arborio won an 8-2 decision over Joey Valentino of Castleton University, before winning 4-3 in overtime against Diego Santiago of New England College.

In the 133-pound weight class, the Golden Bears had two place winners. Freshman Nick Calderone (Selden, N.Y.) finished second while freshman Corey Cope (Quakertown, Pa.) finished fourth. In the 141-pound weight class, junior Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.) finished fourth after a medical default in the third-place match.

Ryan Monteiro took home first place at 157 pounds after going 4-0 for the day, including a 10-2 major decision victory over Marquan Payne of NCAA Division II School East Stroudsburg.

Sophomore Jeffrey Suschana (Somers, Conn.) went 5-1 for the day, finishing in fourth place. Suschana was forced to forfeit the third-place match due to the 6-match rule.

Boyle took first place at 184 pounds after a 4-0 day. In the first-place match, Boyle won a 3-2 decision over 2-time NCAA Division I National Qualifier Elliot Riddick.

Junior Dan Price (Nyack, N.Y.) took second place at 197 pounds. Price went 3-1 on the day, losing a decision to Mitch LeFlam of Castleton, the second-ranked wrestler in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA), in the first-place match.
