Wrestling Falls in Close Match with Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. (January 31, 2020) – The Western New England University wrestling fell to Castleton, 21-16, in a close match on Friday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

The Golden Bears picked up victories in five weight classes. Picking up wins were junior Nick Arborio (Berlin, Conn.), junior Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, N.Y.), senior Alex Starr (Lebanon, Conn.), junior Ryan Monteiro (Wilbraham, Mass.), and senior John Boyle (Rowley, Mass.)

Arborio got things started by securing an 8-2 decision over Joseph Valentino in the 125 weight class. Castleton won the 133 weight class before DeLucia grabbed a 5-3 decision over Antonio Pallaria in 141 to give the Golden Bears a 6-3 lead. 

Starr took home the victory in 149 with a 5-2 decision over Cqari Bacote. Monteiro followed that up by grabbing a 13-5 major decision over Cooper Fleming in the 157 to put Western New England up 13-3.

Castleton took victories in 165 and 174 to cut the Golden Bear lead to 13-12. Boyle secured a 7-2 decision over Jason Hoffman in 184 to push the Golden Bear lead to 16-12. 

Castleton took victories in the last bouts, 197 and 285, to take the win by a score of 21-16.

Western New England will host a quad match at the Alumni Healthful Living Center on Saturday February 8th. The Golden Bears will compete against Southern Maine, Trinity College, and Alvernia College.
