Early Goal Enough for UNE in 1-0 Win over Golden Bears

Trupe finished with 12 saves for Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 18, 2016) – The University of New England field hockey team kept its unbeaten record in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play intact with a 1-0 win over Western New England University this afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

Top Performers
• Junior goalie Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) kept Western New England in the game with 12 saves, making eight in the second half.  

• UNE junior forward Vonde Saunders (Center Conway, N.H.) scored the lone goal of the contest in the seventh minute.

Game Review
• Just 7:34 into the game, Saunders was able to beat Trupe after getting behind the Western New England defense for her 15th goal of the season.
• Western New England freshmen Madison Barron (Lebanon, Pa.) and Jessica Clifford (Auburn, Mass.) each got shots off late in the first half, but neither was able to put a shot on target.
• The UNE defense didn't allow the Golden Bears to record a shot on goal over the final 35 minutes, as both of their attempts were off the mark.
• The Nor'easters continued to apply offensive pressure late in the game, tallying five shots and two penalty corners over the final ten minutes. 

Notes
• UNE outshot Western New England 17-5 and held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
• The Nor'easters, who clinched the top seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament with their win, were receiving the second most votes in the latest NFHCA national poll.
• Trupe's 12-save effort marks her fifth 10+ save performance this season.

Western New England (7-7, 6-3 CCC) will be back in action on Thursday, as the Golden Bears wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 7 p.m. contest against Mount Holyoke College. UNE (14-2, 9-0 CCC) returns home to host Salve Regina on Saturday.
