Men's Tennis Win First Home Conference Match

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 2, 2022) – The Western New England men's tennis team won their first home match in conference play against the Suffolk University Rams with a final score of 7-2 and going 3-3 in the Doubles.

Records:

  • Western New England: 4-2
  • Suffolk University: 1-3

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears won the first four single matches of the day against the Rams. Freshman Nick Bayer started with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Hasan Esrawi in the first single for a WNE 1-0 lead. Team leader, Max Gordon followed with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Suffolk's Dylan Katz to bump the Golden Bears up 2-0. WNE had to battle for their last couple of match wins. In the third singles, junior Sebastian Smreczak had close match but still took the win over Ram's Diego Hernandez-Pons 6-3, 7-5. The last singles match that the WNE collected a victory on was also a battle, Michael Robichaud won 7-6 (6-1), 7-6 over Suffolk's Juan Velasquez. The Golden Bears had a 4-2 advantage after the singles.

The Golden Bears swept in the doubles. Max Gordon and Nick Bayer continuing their impressive play by taking the first double 8-1 against Hasan Esrawi and Diego Hernandez-Pons. The second doubles team for WNE, Sebastian Smreczak and Michael Robichaud got it done for another win after going 8-5 against Dylan Katz and Mathew Gallego bringing WNE to a 6-2 lead. The last double of the day continued to be in the Golden Bears favor. Another 8-5 final score was won by Brandon Greger and Casey VanDenBossche for a 7-2 victory for WNE in the first home match of the 2022 season.
