Western New England Rolls to 64-39 Win at Worcester State

Anderson leads Golden Bears with game-high 17 points

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 22, 2016) – The Western New England University women's basketball team outscored Worcester State University 32-12 in the second and third quarters on its way to a 64-39 non-conference victory this evening at Lancer Gymnasium.

Top Performers
• Senior forward Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led the Golden Bears with a season and game-high 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from three-point range. Anderson also grabbed five rebounds to go with two steals, one block and one assist.
• Senior guard Sammie Battaini (Leominster, Mass.) shot 4-of-7 from the field, 1-of-2 from beyond the arc and 2-for-3 from the free throw line on her way to 11 points, four assists and one steal.
• Freshman guard Meghan Orbann (East Hampton, Conn.) added nine points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist in 15 minutes off the bench.

• Worcester State sophomore forward Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) scored a team-high nine points in 24 minutes off the bench, while also recording four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist.
• Sophomore center Britt Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) finished with eight points, seven rebounds, four blocks and two assists.

Game Review
• Western New England led 14-13 after a tightly contested first quarter that featured seven lead changes.  
• Consecutive layups by sophomore Kate Surprenant (Pelham, N.H,) and Berkel to open the second quarter gave the Lancers a 17-14 lead, but Western New England answered with an 11-0 run to claim an eight-point advantage (25-17). The Golden Bears extended their lead to 12 (33-21) on a jumper by Anderson that capped the scoring in the first half with 1:13 remaining. 
• Battaini and Anderson combined for nine points in the third quarter and Western New England limited Worcester State to just four points as the Golden Bears pushed their cushion to 21 with ten minutes remaining.
• The Lancers were unable to get closer than 16 points (50-34) the rest of the way, as Western New England pulled away late, extending the final margin to 25.

Notes
• Western New England shot 41.1% (24-of-58) from the field, including 35% (7-of-20) from three-point range. The Golden Bears limited Worcester State to a 32.1% (17-of-53) shooting clip, including just 15.4% (2-of-13) from beyond the arc.
• Western New England committed 13 turnovers while scoring 17 points off the Lancers' 21 miscues.
• The 25-point margin represents Western New England's biggest win since February 6, 2016, when the Golden Bears posted a 73-48 triumph at Nichols.
• Western New England held a 38-35 edge on the glass, led by senior forward Paige Young's (Berlin, Conn.) eight boards.
